Strikers Hold Their Nerve in 170 Chase as Autumn League Tightens

Strikers170/1119.5 oversOne over, fourteen runs and a title race waiting to turn. Strikers walked into the final over against Challengers needing a finish worthy of the occasion—and delivered it. Sathyan Mohan supplied the heavyweight blow, Sundar supplied the winning single, and a chase that kept tightening was finally settled with one legal delivery to spare.
The 7 October contest brought together two sides whose strengths were on full display: Challengers had Abhijit Thuse’s explosive batting and incisive bowling; Strikers answered with Sathyan’s all-round influence and a refusal to let the target escape. Their 170/11 against 169/14 brought the teams level on points, even if Challengers retained the league lead on net run rate.
Abhijit and Prem give Challengers something to defend
Challengers chose to bat, but the beginning offered little comfort. They had just 11 on the board after three overs. Abhijit changed the tempo, combining boundaries with the smaller scoring opportunities that matter so much in this format. His contribution finished at 51 net runs from 26 balls—the outstanding batting return of the match.
Prem provided the other major pillar: 31 net from 17 balls without a dismissal. Sixes at 10.6 and 11.3 helped lift Challengers from 58 after nine overs to 97 after twelve. Mahanth Sharma added 19 net from 17, while Abhijit struck another six in the first-innings Power Over and consecutive sixes at 17.2 and 17.3. Challengers had found the acceleration their start demanded.
Strikers kept taking something back. Navin returned three wickets for 40 net runs in 4.0 overs; Bijoy’s 3.0 overs brought two for 20 net. Sathyan held three catches, and Awaiz Usman contributed two catches and a run-out. Two caught dismissals in the final over pulled Challengers back from 174 to their eventual 169/14. The target was substantial, but not beyond reach.
A chase repeatedly pulled back
Sathyan gave Strikers early impetus, hitting six at 1.1 and helping take the chase to 36 after three overs. Sundar then found a six at 3.3. Yet Challengers had a forceful answer: Abhijit’s two caught dismissals in the fifth over cut the total from 53 to 47 before Strikers recovered to 51.
Awaiz’s attacking contribution included six at 8.3; he finished with 16 net from 14 balls. Strikers reached 97 after nine overs, but the middle of the innings belonged increasingly to Challengers’ bowlers. Mahanth bowled John twice in an over. Abhijit finished with three wickets for just 20 net runs across 4.0 overs, while Prem matched his wicket tally with three for 32 net in 4.0.
Fielding reinforced that pressure. Abhijit took two catches; Visagn supplied a catch and a run-out; Prem also recorded a run-out. Strikers stood at 124/10 after fifteen overs and 132/10 after sixteen. Sathyan’s six at 15.4 had kept the chase moving, but there was still work to do.
Fourteen from the last: Sathyan and Sundar finish it
Eleven more runs took Strikers to 143/10 after seventeen overs. Then came a sharp intervention at 17.3: Awaiz was run out, with Kunal Patel credited as the fielder. Strikers regrouped to reach 149/11 after eighteen, then 156/11 after nineteen. Fourteen were required from the final over.
Sundar’s single at 19.1 gave Sathyan the strike. The response was emphatic: six at 19.2, followed by a single. At 164, the chase still needed six. A wide plus a bye lifted the score to 167 and, under WWCC’s final-over rules, required another delivery. Sathyan took two from the re-bowled 19.4 to level the scores. Sundar completed the job with a single at 19.5.

Batting and bowling run figures above use the scorecard’s net convention. Dismissals in WWCC’s paired and Power Over phases do not necessarily end a batter’s innings.
Level on points, separated by the finest margins
Both playing teams received Fair Play. Smashers earned the Leg Umpire duty point and Chargers the Scorer duty point. The table now reads Challengers 40, Strikers 40, Smashers 23 and Chargers 7, with Challengers still first on the existing net-run-rate ordering.
For Strikers, this was more than a successful chase. They matched the leaders under pressure and brought the Autumn League’s summit into sharper focus. Challengers still hold first place—but after a finish decided by one single, the title race has a very different feel.
